Those of you who are already in-touch with the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World toy communities may have heard rumours recently that an Apatosaurus figure was in the works from our friends at Mattel. As of yesterday, those rumours have become facts – with the figure receiving an official listing on UK toy store Smyths.
Below you’ll find the official images and description for this new figure, as well as official images of Apatosaurs and its packaging. Stick around till the end of the article as I’ll also break it down and will give you my thoughts on the latest full-scale sauropod to join Mattel’s 3/34 inch assortment.
‘The Jurassic World Legacy Collection roars into action celebrating classic moments, themes and characters from the blockbuster film franchise! Big-screen action comes alive with the huge Apatosaurus figure inspired by the whole Jurassic World franchise and one of the largest animals to have ever walked on Earth.
This Apatosaurus figure has appeared across the movie franchise and is a fan favourite! This HUGE herbivore figure is 30.5cm tall and more than 112cm long and features theatrical inspired decoration and posable legs.
Retail price for this Dinosaur is 49.99.’
So, a 112cm long Apatosaurus figure is officially landing in stores – with an estimated UK release date looking like the end of March! I have to admit, I am incredibly excited to see Mattel having the confidence to release another large-scale sauropod at this scale. I think many of us felt that the Brachiosaurus was an anomaly of an item – with future releases at a similar scale highly unlikely, so it is very excited to be proven wrong. Whilst the dimensions of this dinosaur perhaps leave a little bit to be desired, there is no doubt in my mind that collectors of all ages will be incredibly happy at having the opportunity to add another lumbering giant from the prehistoric world to their collections.
I hope that this renowned faith and ambition for the Legacy Collection line continues. Not only would another large Sauropod like the Mamenchisaurus be welcome in the collections of many, but there is still plenty of scope to explore other areas of the Jurassic universe as a part of the Legacy Collection. Whether vehicles used by InGen in The Lost World, some of the Jurassic World vehicles present in the park, or even the iconic Ford Explorer, it is safe to say that there is lots of opportunity for the future – so we hope that the anticipation around the Apatosaurus encourages Mattel to continue to give this subline the love it deserves.
What do you think? Has the shock reveal of the Apatosaurus got you excited? What else would you like to see released in the future? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned to Collect Jurassic for more news, reviews and more in the near future!
i feel like an apatosaurus figure is long overdue since it was in jurassic world hasbro never made a figure of it 🙁 and it also appeared in fallen kingdom and mattel only made a minifigure of an apatosaurus. in my opinion it’s about time we get this big herbivore!!!!
Any news on a US release of this figure yet? 🙂
On target I think it said “legacy collection new dinosaur coming August!” But no picture, maybe this is it?
Is there any update about when it will be released in the US? Why reveal it and make it available for so long without any news of a US release?
As an owner of the Legacy Collection Brachiosaurus, I didn’t think that Mattel would go this way. Apatosaurus was longer but shorter than Brachiosaurus, and all I can ask is where the heck will collectors put this? in the corner? regardless, this looks amazing. The detail on the body; the fat rolls on the knee; the light striping on the back: it all looks amazing, and I cannot help but wish for it to come out sooner. Any kid or collector who doesn’t own the Brachiosaurus will love this figure. A Diplodocus, JP 3 Brachio repaint, and an Argentinosaurus are requests I might have, although any more would be grasping at straws. Here’s to the Mamenchisaurus, which, based on the listing in Poland, might get a gigantic figure in the Camp Cretaceous toyline and/or a Legacy collection toy. All-in-all, I would snag this figure as soon as it appears on shelves, as it will be flying off them and soon require sums of money similar to the Brachiosaurus does today.
When will it be released in the US? So far I only seen in UK and no options for international shipping. Sad really- but hopeful for the future…
Hello !
Im wondering if any of you is kind enough to buy one for my nephew and Ill pay you back with all the shipping cost. He love Dinosaurs and have all the collection but we live in USA and they dont bring them here, He is an amazing kid and I will love to see if I can buy for him.
when can i order this in belgium… im not paying 40 euros for import cost alone…
Wow I wonder if there is a even newer one
Possibly another Brachiosaurus.
Finally we’re actually getting a apatosaurus in figure form. Because the existing one was only the Mini apatosaurus. But we’re finally getting this apatosaurus. Somehow it is a legacy collection. Why did they made this into a legacy collection? Apatosaurus appeared in neither of the original Jurassic park films. Only 2015’s Jurassic world, Jurassic world fallen kingdom, and possibly, Jurassic world dominion. Maybe they add it as a legacy collection because it appeared in the Jurassic park novel? Idk why it is part of legacy collection.
Actually, Apatosaurus did appear in the second film, “The Lost World: Jurassic Park”. However, it appeared as a skeleton next to the Operations Center on Site B.
Actually, despite JW being fairly recent, the Legacy Collection toyline covers all dinosaurs that appeared in movies prior to Fallen Kingdom, including Jurassic World itself. Dinosaurs such as the I. rex were in previous movies but not the legacy collection because they appeared in JW: FK in one way or another, whether that be bones or otherwise, or were just cut or meant for the toyline only. So the Apatosaurus being legacy collection makes sense because it is based off an individual from JW.
Oh so it was the bones that Ian Malcom Sarah Harding and kelly rested by I didn’t know that.
The Apatosaurus was probably the only “World” dinosaurs I REALLY wanted a figure of. And yet, this has been so monumentally screwed up that it doesn’t interest me in the slightest.
As a commercial artist myself, its very obvious to me that there are levels of quality with Mattel’s figures. Some are excellent and others are actually pretty poor. This could be that there are two different artists at work, OR (what I think is more likely) is that some figures have been made with digital reference and others have been sculpted by eye.
Examples of the good sculpts are: Tyrannosaurus, Carnotaurus Velociraptors, Ceratosaurus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Baryonyx and Brachiosaurus. Some of these dinosaurs have had their body parts rescaled for production reasons (larger feet on the raptors and rex), but nonetheless the proportions, details and likeness are such a good match for the on-screen dinosaurs that I think its VERY VERY likely they were provided with 3D models from ILM.
Examples of the poor sculpts are: Spinosaurus, Parasaurolophus and Pachycephalosaurus which unlike the above listed figures, do not actually match their on-screen counterparts and have a lot of the stylistic stamps of the artist responsible for designing many of the non-cannon dinosaurs.
Why some clearly have digital reference provided and others don’t beats me, but as someone who works in this arena, I can say you’ll be surprised how much stuff just gets lost. Anyway I digress…
This Apatosaurus is probably one of the worst sculpts of a seen-on-screen-species thus far. Its absolutely as bad as the laughable Spinosaurus and I will bet my money made by the same artist.
What a disappointment after the success of the brachiosaur. After all the hope this one would get produced in the end I’ll be passing!
While I’m definitely interested in this figure and excited to get one (and try to figure out where to put it)… why is it Legacy Collection? Apatosaurus didn’t appear in the first three films, only in JW and JWFK. So that doesn’t really make any sense. It’s not a Legacy dinosaur, so it’s just randomly a Target exclusive for no reason at all.
I’d be in favor of expanding the Legacy Collection IF it stopped being Target exclusive. There are no Targets in my area – nearly all my Jurassic toys are from Walmart or Amazon, especially the latter as of late. I would prefer dropping this branding and just selling “legacy” items as normal JW toys so that they’re available in more stores (the same thing should happen with Battle Damage, since Walmart has abandoned that line and several waves of figures never came to the US). That said, it was much easier to get a Brachiosaurus than it was to get a 2018 Spinosaurus, so while it will be more of a hassle than it should be, it shouldn’t be TOO hard for me to get an Apato.
Apatosaurus actually did appear in the film “The Lost World: Jurassic Park”, but as a skeleton next to the Operations Center on Site B. For example, Edmontosaurus also appeared in that film, but as a skull among the carcasses in the T. rex nest.
It’s about time for Apatosaurus to show up! Now, we just need Corythosaurus and maybe Mamenchisaurus…
How did how did this thing even come out ?!?!?!?!?
Is this an out of season April Fool’s joke?
Kidding aside, can’t wait to snag one.
Put in amazon the mega unbox 😀😀😀😀
Very happy we’re finally getting an Apatosaurus. Here’s to hoping the Mamenchisaurus from TLW gets made, eventually.
