New York Toy Fair: Mattel Destroy ‘N Devour Indominus Rex Recap & HD Gallery

“Oh, Indominus wasn’t bred. She was designed.” Dr. Henry Wu’s casual explanation of the Indominus Rex’s origins probably wasn’t in reference to Mattel, but the toy company certainty did their design homework bringing Jurassic World’s biggest, baddest villain to life in toy form. Arguably the star of Mattel’s New York Toy Fair outing for Jurassic, the Destroy ‘N Devour Indominus Rex delivered on fan expectations and then some. Since being teased earlier this year, we’ve been clamoring to get a closer look at this hyper-accurate toy version of the Jurassic hybrid. Seeing her as the centerpiece of Mattel’s Jurassic booth finally revealed this excellent figure in all of its glory. With killer action features rounding out its gorgeous, film-accurate design, Indominus Rex is set to be the next must-have item for every Jurassic collector.

At first glance, the Destroy ‘N Devour Indominus looks large, bigger than any non-Super Colossal figure yet! But not so large that it doesn’t feel to scale with the rest of Mattel’s Jurassic line. The intimidation factor of its size can’t be understated, especially seeing it next to the various other figures that were also on display during the show. Next to the Bite ‘N Fight Rex, Indominus is the perfect amount of “bigger, louder, more teeth”, particularly when you consider the electronic features. Roars, growls and other terrifying vocalizations from the movie pair with the toy’s unique action features, which we’ll dive into next.

Make no mistake, the ‘Devour’ in this release’s name isn’t just a buzz word. Indominus’ marquee action feature sees the figure lunge downward from its hips to grab other figures with it’s massive jaws, before sweeping upward and swallowing them whole. All of these movements are  controlled via buttons on the back of the figure while pivoting its body at the hips. The mechanics feel smoother than the Thrash ‘N Throw T. rex, and manage to spare Indomoinus the extra seam on its midsection. While the figures remain in the dinosaur’s throat, their silhouette is highlighted via internal LED light—not exactly canon but we loved the effect!  An additional button on the figure controls a grabbing action very similar to the Grab ‘N Growl Indoraptor. However, Indominus’ arm feature full articulation at the shoulders, not just the elbows. It almost feels like a hybrid itself of many other Mattel Jurassic toys, with refined functionality on each borrowed feature for this newest release.

Coming back to the overall aesthetic of the Destroy ‘N Devour Indominus Rex, we could let the pictures speak for themselves when it comes to illustrating the faithful design of Mattel’s figure. However, even high resolution images can’t fully convey the fine details of this beautifully sculpted animal. The head alone features hundreds of individually defined scales and ridges, with sunken nasal and orbital cavities that look to be an exact match to the movie Indominus. This level of detail carries through to the rest of the figure along with slightly tweaked proportions in the feet and tail—both of which appear to be necessary considerations for making Indominus a practical, functional toy.

Overall, our hands-on time with Mattel’s Indominus Rex only seemed to make the wait for the highly anticipated figure feel even longer. This asset won’t be out of containment until Fall, which can’t come soon enough now that we know how well executed—and most of all fun—Indominus is as a toy. Luckily Mattel is aiming for the widest release possible, as the overwhelmingly positive reaction and vocal demand for the Destroy ‘N Devour Indominus Rex during the Toy Fair indicates this one is going to be quite a hit.

Massive thanks to Jurassic Contrast for taking so many awesome photos of the Indominus, its probably the closest you’ll get to holding the figure until she’s released!
